The player starts the game on the tower’s ground floor.
To climb the tower, the player must jump from floor to floor default control: spacebar. The character can pass through the floors from below but lands on them when falling from above. Once the player has landed on a floor, he can move across its surface using the arrow keys. By moving across the floor, the player builds momentum for the next jump. The character can also bounce off the vertical walls on the left and right edges of the tower, allowing them to switch direction while maintaining momentum.
Every time he jumps up to the next platform, he gets a measly ten points. Run him up to a good speed and he can jump higher. Make him fall below the screen, and he be dead. Jump up multiple platforms and you start off the combo metre. If you wait too long and the meter runs out, or you fall back down a stage, or just make a simple one-up jump, it’s gone. Make another multiple jump in the time, though, and you get a combo score. Keep on running fast, jumping high, and comboing and the impressive sound effects intone “Good” or “Sweet”.
Note: The game comes with low quality, low size sound effects 11kHz , but you can download better quality sound files from the Icy Tower homepage 22 or 44kHz. In this review I was using the 22kHz sounds. Not since the chef in Out To Lunch has a little, hatted, jumping game character been so charismatic although in this case less aromatic. From the musically raspy title to Harold’s hat, from his starry-spinning powers to his tinny scream of terror as he falls below the screen, Icy Tower exudes a sweet, sticky substance.
For example, one of the challenges you will come across is the use of the grappling hook, allowing you to pull down towers which are higher up than you. Another is the ability to grapple and swing through the air, allowing you to quickly move about the environment and hit your opponents when they least expect it. It’s these moments, which Icy Tower sometimes fails to give sufficient attention to, that make the game truly enjoyable.
Another aspect that sets Icy Tower apart from similar platform games is the use of an icy tower game mechanic, whereby you fall prey to an increasing level of speed as you continue to fall, eventually sliding off a large platform below you and sliding into an abyss.
This is essentially the same mechanic used in the popular downloadable title, Sonic the Hedgehog, which is why Icy Tower feels a lot more complete as a game overall. Playing on an icy tower causes your speed to drop considerably, but the fact that you are falling is far less important than simply knowing where you’re going; this is why Icy Tower manages to combine the platforming with the jumping aspect so well. We don’t have any change log information yet for version 1.
